Most people who have a professional website or a blog they maintain on their own are always looking for new ways to spice up their site, whether it’s through a new design or font, digital media, or new plug-ins.   Widgets are one easy way to add flair and interactivity to your website or blog.

What’s a widget?

A widget is an application you can add to a website, blog, social networking site, or anything you have editing or coding rights to. Widgets can easily be downloaded, much like the applications you add to your cell phone, but they are typically developed using JavaScript, HTML, or Flash.

A few common examples of widgets you probably see on a daily basis include:

  • Counters that count the number of page views or visits.
  • Countdowns to a specific event (for example, a due date or release of a new product).
  • Information on weather or traffic.

Where can I find widgets?

A simple online search will bring up hundreds of websites that have free widgets for download. If you have a website that is professionally maintained, discuss the type of widgets you have in mind with your web designer. He or she will usually be able to find some or create custom ones for your site.

For the more ambitious, you can also make your own widgets.

How can I make my own widgets?

Anyone who is familiar with Java, HTML, Flash, or CSS can make their own widgets and even share them with others. If you are not familiar with the various internet codes, you can look up tutorials online and read books to easily teach yourself tips and tricks on how to create your own widgets. Many people have so much fun making widgets they have developed entire websites dedicated entirely to widget downloads.
